These photographs were made shortly after North and South Yemen united as one Republic in 1990. Yemen is one of the oldest centers of civilization in the world. By the sixteenth century and again in the nineteenth century, north Yemen was part of the Ottoman Empire, and during several periods its imams exerted control over south Yemen. From 1939 South Yemen was partly a British protectorate. North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 and became a republic in 1962.
